Guiding Principles for Building in the Wachau World Heritage Site / Working Group Wachau

The Wachau was inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000 as a cultural landscape. Therefore, a high-quality building culture is essential with regard to the preservation of the OUV in the Wachau. Building culture plays a significant role with regard to architecture and urban planning and it shapes the ‚image‘ of the region, as well as the quality of life and well-being of residents and of visitors.

Beyond the aspect of conservation, the development of a „Guiding Principles for Conservation in the Wachau World Heritage Site“ must recognise that the Wachau has been classified by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee as a „continuing landscape“ as it was subject to a long-lasting process of change that will continue in the future. The development of the „Guiding Principles for Building in the Wachau World Heritage Site“ is therefore intended to develop a general strategy based on the UNESCO World Heritage Convention and the Operational Guidelines, as well as the recently completed Management Plan, which is officially adopted and accepted by all the involved stakeholders.
